Panligawan Cave offers an unusual introduction to the underground landscapes of Negros Oriental. Its defining feature is an opening in the roof, bringing daylight into a broad chamber below. Here, the attraction is the space itself: stone enclosing a room that remains connected to the sky.

Part of the Bulwang cave group in Mabinay, Panligawan introduces a different way of looking at the island’s interior. Beyond the familiar hills and roads lies a landscape with its own spaces, contours and stories.

A Chamber Open to the Sky

Published visitor accounts describe Panligawan as a short but cavernous cave, with a dome shaped roof and a natural skylight. Its character comes from that combination of enclosure and openness. Looking upwards from within the chamber brings the surface landscape back into view.

A National Commission for Culture and the Arts account records a descent into the cave and the skylight in its interior. Other descriptions identify stone steps at the entrance. These accounts help explain Panligawan’s appeal: the experience centres on entering and observing a substantial chamber rather than undertaking a long underground expedition.

For readers interested in photography or the arrangement of natural spaces, the roof opening is a compelling subject. A photograph can show the relationship between the illuminated opening and the enclosing rock, conveying the cave’s character without relying on its dimensions.

The Limestone Landscape of Mabinay

Mabinay’s caves belong to a limestone landscape in the interior of Negros. Water gradually dissolves limestone along cracks and openings, creating the passages and chambers associated with karst terrain.

Panligawan provides a visible introduction to that landscape. The chamber and opening overhead invite attention to the shape of the rock and the connection between ground level and the space beneath it. Appreciating the cave need not depend on technical geological knowledge.

Its appeal is distinct from the intricate mineral formations of nearby Crystal Cave or the extensive passages of Odloman. Panligawan’s strongest feature is the opportunity to comprehend an underground room through its outline and natural illumination.

A Place in Local Courtship Stories

Panligawan is commonly described as the Courtship Cave. Published accounts recount a local tradition in which couples came here during courtship, with nearby Pandalihan associated with marriage.

The historical basis and precise origins of those stories are less certain. They are best understood as part of the way the caves are remembered and introduced locally, rather than a verified account of ceremonies.

That human association adds another perspective to the chamber. Panligawan can be appreciated as a landform, a photographic subject and a place around which people have told stories. Together, those perspectives give this relatively compact cave a character of its own.
